One of my holgaroid shots, on 06-expired type 88 pola film. Looks waaaaaaaay better in person.

wedding day

© catherine buca 2009
Last time I went to my aunt’s house I brought back mum and dad’s wedding day portrait. It had been on a display cabinet ever since I can remember. Probably since the wedding in 1970. So I took a picture of it, of course.

discarded

© catherine buca 2009
I discarded this old holgaroid shot pretty much as soon as I took it (which was at least a year ago, maybe more). I don’t think I ever scanned it, or even gave it a second look. It’s a crappy composition, and the exposure is all batshit crazy (it is a holga, after all), but I quite like it now. There haven’t been many polaroid shots I’ve thrown away, which is probably a good thing because I get to like them later on even if I didn’t at first.

more holga shots
It doesn’t matter how many photos I take of trees I never stop enjoying them. These are in Hanley Park.

clearing and glistening
I’m on to the second roll now. I can’t remember whether this was taken in Hanley Park or Hanley Cemetery. Either way, it’s got trees and it’s got light, and that’s all you really need, to be honest.

This one was in Hanley Park …

I’ve got a bunch of things I want to write about, but no time at the moment. Photos will do for now.

peppers and stuff
I’m loving my polga. I’ve had her for a long time, but haven’t used her for a while. I tend to leave off the additional polaroid lens that comes with the polaroid back, and I’ve broken the thread on the main lens so I can twist it out even further to focus really close. I like the extra freedom it gives.

Lola m kindly told me that in IE my name at the top of this blog was cut in half. I’ve removed the negative margin I’d added to the header, in hope that it will remedy it. I wanted the name to bump right up against the top of the window. In Firefox 3 and Safari on my Mac the negative margin made it do just that. It would seem IE plays will a whole different set of rules though. If anyone cleverer than me can tell me how I can specify different rules for the different browsers I’d be most grateful. In the mean time, has removing the negative margin done the trick? Is the whole of my name showing in IE now?
In other news, I have this 38mm super-wide angle lens on its way to me. Despite being stony broke at the moment, I just couldn’t resist it.
I’m also considering a graphics tablet. I use a boring bog-standard mouse for my PS work, so the pen tool and anything remotely intricate is out. I’d always thought tablets were for illustrators, but I’ve recently been told they are incredibly useful for normal PS work too. Does anyone have any experience with them they can tell me about? I’m thinking about the Wacom Bamboo – something cheap and simple to test the waters with.
I’m sure there was something else I wanted to write about today, but I can’t remember. Soz.

monument glass

I knew there was a reason I loved my polga, and why I stocked up on so much black and white film for it a while back (now out of date by a few months).
(This photo looks aces on black, btw.)
Oh, and in case you’re following my ker-razy new way of assessing the worth of my photographs, I’d say I like the top 10-15% of this one the best.
